How long does a late payment stay in your credit report?

Credit bureaus like Equifax and Transunion will keep any negative information such as late payments in your credit report for up to 6 years.

According to Government of Canada, credit bureaus such as Equifax or Transunion can keep negative credit information in a customer’s record for up to 6 years. In rare cases, records can stay for 10+ years such as multiple bankruptcies. The reason for bad credit reports to stay several years is for credit vendors to determine customer’s eligibility for a loan. Unfortunately, any information in the credit report whether good or bad cannot be deleted or modified. However, good credit report information will stay longer than bad ones. A good credit information can stay up 20 years. A long positive and ongoing credit history what you can strive for in credit report.
